NATPE: Miami, FL – January 17, 2017  Following the resounding success of Versailles Season One, Ovation TV, America’s only arts network, has acquired U.S. premiere rights to Season Two of the international hit series from Banijay Rights, the international distribution arm of Banijay Group.  A Canal+ Creation Originale, the series is co-produced by Capa Drama, Zodiak Fiction and Incendo.

Season One of Versailles debuted on Ovation TV October 1, 2016, establishing itself as the most-watched telecast for the network to date.  The series follows the reign of King Louis XIV, a monarch who will stop at nothing to achieve his vision of creating the most-beautiful palace in Europe and seizing absolute control of France and his enemies. Versailles was brought to life by critically acclaimed creative team including Executive Producers Simon Mirren (Without a Trace, Criminal Minds), David Wolstencroft (Spooks, The Escape Artist), Claude Chelli (Braquo), Jean Bureau (Crusoe), Anne Thomopoulos (Rome) and Director Jalil Lespert (Yves Saint Laurent).

“The ratings, audience response and social engagement with this series has been off the charts,” said Scott Woodward, EVP of Programming and Production, Ovation. “Ovation TV’s marketing and promotional ingenuity paid dividends as Versailles built up steam leading up to its debut. We are looking forward to keeping this momentum going with Season Two this year.”

Season Two of Versailles (10 x 60’), which stars George Blagden (Vikings), Alexander Vlahos (Merlin) and Anna Brewster (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), is directed by Thomas Vincent (The Tunnel), Mike Barker (Broadchurch) and Louis Choquette (Rumours).

“We are thrilled that Season One of Versailles was a record breaking hit for Ovation. Its success really cemented the global appeal of this international juggernaut. We are excited to be working with the Ovation team again and look forward to seeing how audiences react as the story of King Louis VXI and his subjects in the court of Versailles continues to unfold,” said Andreas Lemos, Vice President, Sales & Acquisitions, North America, Banijay Rights.

In Season Two, we witness the dark underbelly of power as Louis sees the dream of his grand Versailles palace crumbling before his eyes. With phase one of the palace complete, most of France’s eminent lords and ladies now live under the Sun King’s roof. Drugs, gambling, and alcohol are rampant, as nobles begin to poison each other in order to get closer to the King and climb up the social ladder. Blinded by his passion for his mistress Montespan, Louis refuses to listen to the advice of the church and his closest advisors. Surrounded by darkness and depravity, he loses his sense of purpose and, in a desperate attempt to escape, leaves for war against his arch enemy William of Orange. He must discover the path back to light and redemption to save his vision of Versailles.
