Fashion Fund Designers: What Inspires You?

The Fashion Fund Season 2 finale is almost here! Before we find out the big winners, we’re asking the final tenĀ  (a.k.a. the 2014 Ten Best Designers in America!) what inspires their designs. To see their inspirations transformed into beautiful fashions, and of course to find out the winners, tune in to The Fashion Fund, Wednesdays at 10ET / 7PT on Ovation.

Question: What Are Your Biggest Influences OUTSIDE the World of Fashion?

Edie Parker: Modern Art, vintage jewelry, Art Deco architecture and objects.

Ryan Roche: I love photographer Corinne Day and David Hamilton, Lou Dillon for her music and style, Ryan McGinley, and Donald Judd.

Eva Fehren: Hans Wegner, Clyfford Still, Eva Hesse, Robert Maplethorpe, Man Ray, Jackson Pollock, Willem De Koonig.

Grey Ant: Alex Katz, Kate Bush, modern art in general including architecture and furniture design, nature.

Tanya Taylor: Live music concerts, fine art and travel. I am also very influenced by photography and imagining the mood of women shot in black and white portraits.

Simon Miller: Richard Serra’s modern forms, Ben Tierney’s industrial photographs of Los Angeles and the American west, and Charles Derenne’s music which perfectly blends low-fi electronic with string instrumentals.

Gigi Burris: Art and photography play a huge role in my design inspiration. This season was taken from Yves Klein and Robert Mapplethorpe.

Paul Andrew: I am always influenced by art…it’s just what speaks to me. For spring 2015 I was inspired by Matisse’s cut outs. For the Fall 2015 season I’ve been looking at Richard Serra’s Torqued Ellipses; the color of the weathered steel and the way he manipulates form to create negative space never fails to impress.
