Best Of 2014: Music Lists

With 2014 rapidly wrapping up, it’s time to weed through the “best of” lists. Whether your musical tastes run to Taylor Swift, FKA Twigs, or The Black Keys, there’s plenty on these lists for you! Find out whether you really experienced the year in music or need to catch up with our list of lists: the best music of 2014 from our most trusted internet sources.

Slate touts the “Year of the (female) Rookie.” And yes, that’s a reference to one of our favorite cultural zeitgeists, Tavi Gevinson.

Rolling Stone counts down the year’s singles featuring tracks by everyone from Coldplay to St. Vincent.

NPR’s All Songs Considered, the music nerd’s mecca, has so many lists you could read them till next year. For a quick(ish) fix, try either their 50 best albums or their listener-picked 25 best albums of the year. If you’re really into it go ahead and play their 302-song mix of 2014 tracks (on an oh-so-pretty mixtape app).

Huffington Post has a seriously eclectic list that includes an awesome defense of One Direction (yes THAT One Direction), which they’ve listed right next to Bad Suns. Check it out!

Paste Magazine includes Spotify playlists for each artist in their indie-tastic “50 Best Albums” list topped by one of our personal 2014 favorites!

Pitchfork, that bastion of anti-mainstream music (sometimes bordering on complete obscurity), provides a 50 best albums list that includes Taylor Swift AND Ariana Grande! And yes, it also includes a number of bands known only by Pitchfork devotees.

So there you have the list of lists for 2014 music! If one of these lists doesn’t turn you on to some sick new music, well – congratulations, you REALLY experienced the year in music. Feel free to coast until the new year.
